Sharing Value with Society is Key to How We Operate
VLI manages a railway network of nearly 8,000 km, reaching over 300 municipalities. Dialogue and transparency are the foundation of our relationship with the communities we engage with. Through our initiatives, we strive to promote local development and a harmonious interaction between our operations and the communities, generating shared value. Community engagement and regional development are not just key focus areas for us—they are fundamental to how we operate. This work is guided by our social action strategy. Designed specifically by VLI, these initiatives enhance our corporate strategy while adapting to local needs, creating a distinct identity and engagement opportunities.
Building Relationships with People and Communities
Through a strategy focused on community management and initiatives such as workshops, lectures, campaigns, meetings, and other activities, we aim to community development while reinforcing the essential link between safety and railways.

Community Connection Project
Promotes art, culture, and education activities in public schools, engaging teachers and students. The goal is to explore and highlight the cultural and historical assets of the communities in which VLI operates. The topics covered include cultural traditions, family and social economy, and the region’s tourism opportunities, with the aim of empowering local leaders.

Memories Station Project
The history of the cities along the FCA railroad [Ferrovia Centro-Atlântica] is closely connected to Brazil’s railway heritage. Aware that valuing the past is essential to shaping the present, VLI created and continues to the Estação de Memórias project. Through partnerships with local governments and co-creation with communities, the project revitalizes unused train stations into cultural spaces, hosting exhibitions dedicated to local memory and history.
Key benefits:
• the preservation of both tangible and intangible heritage.
• Preserve, document, and promote railway heritage.
• Strengthen the cultural and historical identity of local municipalities.

New Track Project
Since 2021, we have been carrying out the Novo Trilho project. Beyond ensuring clean and well-maintained railway tracks, the initiative aims to create new opportunities for the communities surrounding our operations. Through this project, waste has been transformed—it is now a resource that generates value. The approach is simple: engaging local communities and encouraging more sustainable behaviors through proper waste disposal. By turning recyclable materials into a source of income that promotes financial dignity, Novo Trilho meaningfully connects social and environmental impact. Since its launch, it has become a key driver of positive social change.
Other projects
Open Arms Project
This VLI initiative invites educational institutions, communities, and the families of our employees to visit our facilities, with the goal of bringing communities closer to the operations of the Company.
VLI Solidarity Project
Launched in 2012, this is our corporate volunteer initiative that encourages civic participation and social engagement, bringing together our employees to contribute to the development of the areas where the Company operates. By doing so, we create a lasting legacy in the communities and strengthen our relationships through solidarity. Together, we’ve engaged more than 500 employees in community projects across the ten states where we are present.
Our Fishing Bait Initiative
This project was developed together with the fishing communities of the cities of Santos, São Vicente, Cubatão, and Guarujá, located in the Baixada Santista region of São Paulo state. Its goal is to teach local fishermen how to farm shrimp and lambari fish in tanks, so they can be sold as live bait for sport fishing, a popular activity in the region. Additionally, it aims to provide an alternative source of income for families while strengthening the local economy and culture.
Through theoretical and practical courses held at the Institute’s headquarters in Santos, traditional fishermen learn techniques to set up a live bait maintenance unit using a water recirculation system.
This initiative is carried out with the technical of the Instituto de Pesca, a division of the São Paulo Agency for Agribusiness Technology (APTA), under the São Paulo State Department of Agriculture and Food Supply, and is also ed by the Agribusiness Research and Development Foundation (Fundepag).
Environmental Commitment Program
Our environmental education program creates a lasting impact by raising awareness about the importance of preserving the environment and the need for behavioral change. To achieve meaningful results, we collaborate with local communities, schools, public authorities, community leaders, councils, and non-governmental organizations in the areas where we operate.
The key benefits of Atitude Ambiental include:
- Reduction of irregular waste disposal, promoting a circular economy;
- for educators through lessons and activities within schools;
- Technical assistance for projects developed by municipalities.
